Montgomery Academy Junior Lauren Jones recently met with Congressman Barry Moore during his recent trip to Wetumpka. Lauren met with him on behalf of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Moore did not commit to Lauren or her mother, Leah, that he would support the Insulin Act, which aims to lower the cost of insulin for commercial insurance plans and bring relief to the uninsured.
Insurance coverage of insulin, a medically necessary drug for Type 1 and many Type 2 diabetes patients, varies wildly from plan to plan and by the specific type of insulin the patient requires. In Lauren’s case the treatment costs more than $2,000 per month. Leah Jones, Lauren’s mother, has been advocating for relief on behalf of the JDRF for many years.
“Previous versions of the bill have failed in the past, but with the current bill the covered treatments have been pared down to just the insulin itself and not the other supplies that go along with diabetes,” Jones said. She hopes that with a narrower focus, and congressional elections later this year, there may be increased receptivity among Moore and his colleagues in Congress to pass the bill and give relief to American families.
“Congressman Moore encouraged Lauren to apply for an internship so maybe she will have the opportunity to learn the system and make a bigger impact in the future,” Leah said.
JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. As a non-partisan organization, we are conducting a national initiative through September called the ‘Promise to Remember Me’ campaign in an effort to meet with ALL Members of Congress to give voice to the T1D community and advance our key issues. Currently, our advocates are laser focused on drumming up bi-partisan support for the INSULIN Act – in Alabama alone our advocates have scheduled or held 8 out of 9 total possible Congressional meetings.
The proposed Insulin Act will cap monthly out-of-pocket costs at the lesser of $35 or 25% of the net insulin price in commercial plans and incentivize manufacturers to lower list prices via a certification process
JDRF has been working for years with the lead sponsors of the Insulin Act, Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), to develop viable policy solutions for insulin affordability that will have the greatest impact for the most people with diabetes.
