Verve Times - Latest News around the World

Today, Season 4 arrives—Borgen – Power & Glory—which is both triumphantly good and a little jarring in its shift in tone. Creator Adam Price has returned, as has almost all of the cast, but they have not brought the sunny disposition of Borgen’s first three seasons with them. The mood has dimmed in Denmark, and Nyborg, now 53 and the country’s foreign minister, is more ruthless and driven than ever. The plot turns on a discovery of massive oil reserves in Greenland, which is a territory under Danish control but has its own claims to sovereignty. Billions are at stake in the question of whether to drill, as is Denmark’s reputation as a climate leader. And in a timely plot-twist, Russian interests lurk behind the oil company that stands to make a fortune.

An oil discovery in Greenland is a critical plot point in the new season.

I previewed half of the new eight-episode season and I am both gripped by the twists and made melancholy by the way all my favorite Danish ministers, civil servants, and journalists have aged—more wrinkles, more kilograms, and one beloved political ally to Nyborg has signs of dementia. But the writing is sharp and Knudsen’s performance is still dazzlingly subtle; she wrings empathy from the viewer while keeping Nyborg’s flaws–chiefly her obsession with winning at any cost–on full display. The Danish actors, especially Birgitte Hjort Sørensen as star political journalist Katrine Fønsmark, are uniformly fantastic. One of Borgen’s delights is its portrayal of the media, and we return to the HQ of Denmark’s leading TV news organization, TV1, where scoops are a bloodsport and painful journalistic compromises lay in wait. This new Borgen looks like other Scandi-noir dramas that have emerged since its inaugural run, but it is in a league of its own: crisp, intelligent, and thrillingly addictive.

You’ll want to start at Season 1 if you’re new to Borgen’s world—38 episodes right there for the taking. Subtitles on, feet up, press play. Skoal!
